Snake of Light EP by Selve

Disclaimer: We know the frontman of the band Selve, Loki Liddle, very well. Perhaps too well. And it is impossible for us to listen to his music and not hear his infectious positive energy that is at times mixed with a shared frustration towards a colony that forces him to reconnect a fragmented story. Knowing Loki well and writing about his music is okay. After all pretending you don’t know the people you are writing about is a very white thing to do and we ain’t about that sh*t. So we want you to know Loki is our little brother. And he has released music that we think people should listen to.

Selve are a band of mischievous devils led by Indigenous front man and songwriter Loki Liddle. They create narrative driven music that ranges from psychedelic weirdness to good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll. The aim is to slip on the skin of whatever genre necessary in order to drive home their strange message while aiding in the decolonisation of the music industry.

Selve’s debut EP Snake of Light comes off the back of some impressive live performances in 2020 - and it is the kind of journey we expect from Loki: eclectic, spirited and detailed. From the blurry late night party track, Lucid Leaves, to the melodic storytelling of Niya, Selve continues to experiment and find their sound. Snake of Light is best served loud...and maybe with a white wine spritzer (or lemonade).
